One of the better uses for Xbox Live: crime-busting

When his Xbox 360, Apple PowerBook and flat-screen TV were stolen in a recent break-in, Jesse McPherson (left) had no inkling that gamers from around the world would band together to hunt down the thieves.

Frustrated by what he said was a lack of police response, McPherson began a bit of his own sleuthing and found that someone had tried to sell his PowerBook at a nearby pawn shop. As the Philadelphia Daily News reports, the big break in the case came after McPherson’s coworkers chipped in to buy him a new 360. When he logged on to Xbox Live, one of the thieves began taunting him and even left voice messages offering to sell the stolen console back to McPherson.

When McPherson posted the story of the brazen - but not especially clever - thief on Digg, the gaming community too notice and swung into action. Armed with the crook’s Xbox Live GamerTag, they found his online photo collection, his self-made rap video on YouTube and even his real name, address and phone number.

Police: Man charged with beating girl with video game controller

YORK, Pa. - A 2-year-old girl was in a coma Monday after her mother's boyfriend allegedly beat her with a video game controller, police said.

York police Lt. Ron Camacho said the girl suffered severe injuries to her head and body and was being treated at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Police did not release her name.

The girl's mother, Neida E. Baez, 19, called an ambulance Sunday afternoon after her boyfriend, Harve L. Johnson, 26, brought the unconscious child to her, limp and wet from his attempt to revive her in the bathtub, according to a police affidavit.

Both Baez and Johnson were in York County Prison, police said. Baez was charged with endangerment of a child and Johnson was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and other counts.

Johnson admitted to beating the girl with a video game controller before she lost consciousness, police said. Baez said Johnson has abused the girl in the past, the affidavit said.

The staff of District Judge Richard E. Martin II said they did not know whether Baez and Johnson had attorneys.

Yeah this SSL vulnerability is all the rage right now on the Ubuntu and Debian forums. It's a good thing I don't use this desktop as an online test server (just an offline one).

Luckily, the server RR's on isn't Debian-based, I'm quite sure.
