Jeff Atwood says the same thing: more cores != automatic better performance. The article is over a year old, but some of the sentiments are still relevant.

Who needs a floppy drive these days? Most stuff comes in CDs, or you can download things you need from the internet anyway. But if you really need it...

The system is pretty good for the price. It should do well enough on everything. Even on games, but don't expect to be able to run the newest ones on the highest settings. If you can live with good enough performance, then you should be set.

Before we go on any further, what kinds of games are you planning to play? The really high-end ones like Crysis? Or something more like, Half-Life 2/Portal?

Also, are you buying from online retailers? Will they ship? Or are you just using those as a canvassing tools?

As a whole it seems better just because you're getting an Intel and 2GB of RAM. I'm not sure about what will perform better in the long run though, the Palit NVidia card you originally posted, or this new Palit ATI one.

Since you're buying parts individually, chances are it won't be assembled. Also, you probably don't get an OS included in the mix. Try haggling for an XP license.

I've been told repeatedly that the best thing to do for now is to wait for the new batch of Intel cores to come out, if you can do that.

my friend says pcbodega assembles them so they can test it before shipping. the first build is pretty similar to the one he has already ordered. i'm still waiting for his answer on Jack Sparrow's World-Famous Cabin Apertures, ARRRR!

Here's some more info to confuse you more:

"Intel Dual Core" and "Intel Core2 Duo" are different types of processors even though both of them are dual cores, they have different architectures (build design) where Core2 Duos are newer.
The advantage of Core2 Duo is that they have a larger L2 cache (built-in temporary data storage which can be accessed at a much higher speed than the system's RAM) and they run cooler. But unfortunately, they cost more.

The Core2 equivalent of the E2180 is the E4400. As you can see in Intel's website, the E4400 has a 2MB L2 cache (x2 of E2180). In actual system tests especially for games, there is a 12%-13% difference in performance (refer here) of 2MB from 1MB. And you said before that you are going to use it for games, Core2 Duo would be a better choice.

The bottom line is, does 12% more performance and cooler running temperature worth the added cost for choosing Core2 Duos?
(im not sure how much the difference in costs is but i think its not that much ).


About the videocard, HD3850 is a good choice but you could save more money if you get the 256MB model rather than the 512MB one. 17" monitors can't take full advantage of the 512MB video memory since the resolution that you will be using is not that large. (even now I am using a 7900gs with only 256MB memory on a 24" monitor and I can still play Stalker Clear Skies on its maximum resolution without any hiccups)

So I think its better to get the 256MB variant of the HD3850 and put the money you saved on other parts like for example the processor or motherboard, right?

Have you tried going to Gilmore or Greenhills? You could always get low priced goods there, just do some canvassing then plan your build accordingly. Just an idea.

Dual Core's architecture is much better for over-clocking than Core2 Duos. So if you plan to do OCs, E5200 would be a great candidate since it also boasts a 2MB L2 cache and the highest clock speed from the series.
After OCing it, you would just need one hell of a cooling system to prevent it from turning out into flames.

Intel plans on releasing "Core i7" this fall, a few articles are already on the net about tests done on a leaked hardware of i7. So far the results were not so outstanding or ground breaking.

"Many early articles suggest that i7's design is not ideal for gaming performance. In a test done on leaked hardware, a Core i7 940 compared to a QX9770 shows the Core i7 is slower than Yorkfield clock for clock in 2 games while being faster in the other two. Difference in all cases are small."
