This is a bit of a long post
Anyways got results from Gameloft
Modeling: Model is a wee bit heavy but at least edge flow/topology is clean now
You can do high and low poly very easily which is also a good thing since sometimes we might have to do high poly projects
Your models are animation friendly, they deform properly
Your proficient both in Maya and Max
You can keep within the poly limit easily also
Unwrapping: Good clean unwraps, you can handle non symmetric, symmetric and combination of both
Rigging/Animation: you don’t need to be good at this since your applying for a modeler/texturing job but its good you have an idea
Zbrush: we don’t really use 3rd party software like zbrush, xnormal, roadkill etc but it come it handy some day usually bigger studios handle use those software
Texturing: Now this is where you flunked, but good news you are pretty close you just needed to add more detailing to your textures next time, like make the folds more convincing, you could have added more details to the shoes, the head/face, I checked your portforlio your used to sculpting the muscles details etc but here in Gameloft we don’t use zbrush so yeah next time you have to paint those details on manually
Another thing is that your really passionate about what you do, you know a lot about it even though you have very little industry experience, I am bit surprised actually you didn’t come from a game design/3d animation course yet you know a lot about it
Bottom line yes you failed the test but you were pretty close just need a bit of practice on texturing add more details next time and try to get used to texturing folds, muscles etc without using zbrush
At least the senior 3d artist was also kind enough to give me a short tour of the Gameloft studio (Philippine Branch)
What makes job hunting hard for my case the techniques/software changes depending on the industry and company/studio
Example:
3d Exam for Anino Games: using 3dmax, model and unwrap no need to texture
3d Exam for Studio 6: it’s a 2d anatomy test actually but the anatomy has to be near perfect
3d Exam for Lady Luck Game Studios: haven’t taken their test yet but they use zbrush since they work on ps3 games so a much stronger game engine thus it can handle a much much higher poly count that’s why they use zbrush since a ps3 game engine can handle it anyways
3d Exam for Gameloft: model and texture, since there mostly iphone games they don’t use zbrush in their workflow, so yeah since I gotten used to sculpting the details in zbrush…for gameloft your suppose to texture all those details
This is just for the game industry when it comes to film/vfx/animation it changes again since no more game engine to worry about so a much much higher poly count and they use 3d Maya not max so most of the time for film/vfx/animation most of the details are modeled in instead of faking it through textures
So yeah that’s the problem with 3d XD it changes depending on the studio and industry
So….of it some of the things I had to be good at, it had to be one of the things hard to find work in ><
Rant: I lost my freakin umbrella, those students at uni only steal umbrellas when there is rain pouring down the streets. I let out my umbrella and whoops, three of us had our umbrellas stolen. WTF, go buy your own and bring your own.
