Here's how it's going to go down:

Gen. McChrystal will walk into the Situation Room in the White House tomorrow and salute the President. McChrystal will apologize to him and the senior civilian and military leaders in the room. McChrystal will then offer his resignation as field commander. The Commander in Chief will accept and announce the name of the new Allied Commander of ISAF.

That's what's happening right now: SecDef Gates, CJCS Adm McMullen and senior DoD staff are looking at McChrystal's replacement for recommendation to the President.

Whether McChrystal has violated UCMJ Article 88 is yet to be determined. But this is not the first time the general has been insubordinate. He was forgiven last year as being "inexperienced in dealing the press" when he publicly announced he would not support U.S. strategy to increase the use of drones in Afghanistan.

It appears that McChrystal not only fails at understanding constitutional and military law regarding civilian leadership, he seems incapable of keeping his mouth shut. Worse, he doesn't appear to learn from past mistakes. Dangerous traits in a military leader responsible for the lives of hundreds of thousands of troops and the successful prosecution of war strategy.

McChrystal was forgiven once. I don't see how he can possibly survive this second episode of public insubordination.

Our military leadership simply will not stand for it.
