What emulator are you using? It also helps that you make a CD image (.bin and .cue works best for PSX games) and just let your emulator load from the disk image. Mine works fine after making a CD image (I used .bin IIRC) even after my original CD is virtually scratched beyond repair (Making the CD image took a long time, but it did work perfectly).

there's something wrong with my epsxe. it's reaaaaaaally slow.
i downloaded another emulator called pSX. it runs smoothly, but it crashes after a short while.
btw, how do you make CD images?

There's a variety of programs you can use. My personal pick is Ultra ISO for its ease of use in making CD images, there are other choices such as DVD decriptor in case you want alternatives. Try messing with the options in epsxe to get optimal results, or maybe its just that the CD is pretty scratched, prohibiting smooth game play which happens to me at times (running a game in its ISO form will run the game faster).
Ultra ISO:

no, the CD is not scratched. it's brand new actually. and um, original.
the cds in the FM history set have this layer of black plastic underneath....

Hahaha you really are a wanzerfreak.
Yeah, your best choice is to extract an iso and just play the game from your harddrive.

I wonder if he can be happy enough to not bust anyone's chops on gamespot or gamefaqs though.

Yeah Rick did say something back then about one of the earlier stages being one of the hardest in the game.
Oh great, now I want to play this too.
Problem is, I can't find torrents of it anywhere.

I have the CD image if you're interested, but its in Japanese (though the menus, names, options, stats, and in-game storyline as shown on the in-game net feature are all in English).
Oh and the 3rd mission is the hardest, I swear. Its like 4 player wanzers + 3 NPCs against an army of a dozen or so wanzers, tanks and APCs. There are a lot of hard missions in the game though, but everything seems to be cakewalk if even just one of your characters reaches level 30 (the highest) in any skill (Melee, short, long) as it seems like that particular character can dodge anything.
There's also the teleport bug in the game, which allows your wanzers to move anywhere in the map without AP penalty. In addition, you'll see the biggest (2nd) final boss in FM history which occupies 3x4 squares in the map.
