Well, fresh water shortage has always been an issue for desert nations, and will become a significant one for others should we deplete/contaminate the last underground aquifers. There was a talk from a few years ago on how future armed conflicts will be fought over the control for freshwater supplies. However, such a concern should be mitigated when desalination techniques (or acquiring freshwater from saltwater) became advanced and widespread enough to be cost-effective.
