Depends on what i've got available and what kind of model i'm building.
Aerosol lacquers for large, flat areas (legs, wings, shields)
Enamels for details and smaller body parts (arms, feet, weapons)
Fine-point pens for panel lines, Markers for black areas
For first and basic grade models, i just use the enamels bought in hardware stores. I get basic colors only (green, red, yellow, blue, black and white) then mix them to create the color i need. For higher grades (HG and up), i bust out the fancier paints.
Example:
Instead of gunmetal gray for the beam rifle barrels, i just painted them black. I'm not skilled enough to use putty so the seams are still visible. Plus, i couldn't twist the brush enough so the front part of the knee joints are still white instead of gold like the back part of the knee joints.
