Weapons and myths

Mirage has a certain way of naming their parts. Heads are named after insects, legs are named after predatory animals and arms are named after primates. Ever wondered what the names behind the weapons are. They're from mythical monsters and creatures taken from Greek, Roman, Norse and other legends and mythologies. Here's some info i gathered from some of my books.

Weapons
ARGOS, ARGOS2 (Pulse rifle)
The kingdom of Agamemnon. Also, the name of the man who built the Argo, the ship in which the Argonauts sailed in search for the Golden Fleece.

CACUS (Rocket Launcher)
A giant son of Vulcan who appears in Roman mythology. He stole some of the cattle of Geryon from Hercules and by dragging them backwards into his cave hoped to elude discovery, since he thought their hoofprints wouls suggest that they were going int the opposite direction. Unfortunately for him, Herc heard the cattle mooing and killed Cacus.

CERBERUS (Dual barreled laser cannon)
The three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the lower world. The creature was concieved of as having a serpent's tail and a mane of serpents. One of Hercules' labors was to drag the formidable monster up into the upper world and after showing it to Eurystheus (who had set the Twelve Labors) and then take it back.

CENTAUR (dual vertical missile launcher)
Beastmen who roamed the wilds of the Roman and Greek mythic worlds. They were mentioned as having the lower bodies of either horses or deer and the upper bodies of men. Highly intelligent yet warlike, they were often branded as "Guardians of the wilds".

CHIMERA (Quartet laser cannon)
A fire-breathing monster whose body consisted of a lion in front, a goat in the middle anda serpent behind. It was killed by Bellerophon.

DRYAD, DRYAD2 (Hi-act missile launcher)

ECHIDNA (Pursuit missile launcher)
A monster and a prolific breeder of monsters. Half-woman and half-serpent, her parentage is variously given as Tartarus and Gaea

ELF, ELF2, ELF3 (laser blade)

EMPUSA, EMPUSA2 (Missile launcher)
Monsters in various frightful forms, sent by Hecate to frighten travelers. They were amorous and generally finished their acts by eating their lovers. Among the Empusae were the Lamia.

ETTIN (Plasma rifle)

FAIRY (Machine gun)

FENRIR (Energy sniper rifle)
The wolf-monster in Norse mythology. It was concieved by Loki and is stronger than all of the Aesir. At Ragnarok, it is fated to swallow the sun and kill Odin. After killing Odin, it is destined to be torn in two by Vidar, strongest and largest of Odin's many sons.

FINGER (Multi-barrel machine gun)

GAST (Assault rifle)

GARUM (Sniper rifle)
A misspeling of Garm. Garm was the Norse equivalent of Cerberus. He is the snarling hound that guards the gates of Hel. At Ragnarok, he will be released and will kill and be killed by the god Tyr.

GERYON, GERYON2, GERYON3 (laser cannon)
A winged, three-headed, three-bodied monster who lived on the island of Erytheia and had a herd of man-eating cattle, which was guarded by a two-headed dog, Orthros, and a fierce shepherd. The bringing back of these cattle was one of Hercules's labors, a labor that he succesfully accomplished even though he had to kill Geryon, Orthros and the shepherd.

GOLEM (Sniper rifle)
Golems have appeared in many stories and video games - including Tolkien’s books - but its roots lie in Jewish folklore. The Rabbi Loew of Prague, wanting to create a guardian for the weak and poor of the city, had created with a skeleton of tree sticks and flesh made of clay. He was brought to life, and made a servant of the people. He could take orders and learn, but he could not speak. Eventually, he experienced enough to grow a personality, and his power went to his head. The golem became a menace and the Rabbi had to dismantle him. There is still a statue of the Golem in Prague. To animate the Golem, a small tablet is placed under its tongue daily, and the Hebrew word Ameth (truth) is written on its forehead. To kill the Golem, the tablet had to be removed, and the word Ameth had to be changed to Meth (death) by erasing the first letter.

GORGON (Laser rifle)
Three frightful sisters, daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. They had snakes for hair and to look on them turned men to stone. Their names were Stheno ("the mighty"), Euryale ("the wide-wandering") and Medusa ("the cunning one"). Medusa was the youngest of the three and the only one among them who was a mortal. She was eventually slain by Perseus, who killed her with a variety of magical acoouterments by looking at her through a mirror and striking backwards with his sword. At the moment of her death, Medusa was pregnant by Poseidon and from her blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse and Chrsaor, the monster who later fathered Geryon and Echidna. Medusa's petrifying head adorned the aegis of Zeus and Athena

GRIFFON (Laser rifle)
An animal with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. It guarded gold and warred eternally with the Arimaspians, a Scythian people endowed with only one eye and an insatiable lust to steal gold. As an emblem of valor and magnanimity, the Gryphon is much employed in heraldry and coats of arms.

HARPY, HARPY2 (Orbit cannons)
Winged creatures, these were the daughters of Thaumas and Electra. They were sometimes represented as women with bird's wings, sometimes as birds with women's faces. They appear in the Oddysey as having snatched away the daughters of Pandareos "to serve the terrible Furies." They are best known for stealing the food of the blind seer Phineus and so befouling it that he could not eat it. They were, however, driven away by Calais and Zetes, sons of Boreas, who had arrived with the Argonauts, who needed certain advice from Phineus. The names of the Harpies in various accounts are Aello, Ocypete, Celaeno and Podarge.

HOLLOW (Laser rifle)

HYDRA, HYDRA2 (Multi-missile launcher)
A monster from Greek mythology, According to the myths, the hydra actually had much more than two heads - at least nine, and sometimes described to have as many as one hundred. One of Hercules' twelve labors was to kill the hydra. Unfortunately, every time he cut off a head, two would grow back in its place. So Hercules got his nephew Iolaus to cauterize (burn) each stump after chopping off a head - and he had to bury the last head under a boulder. Furthermore, the rather nasty goddess Hera sent a crab to nip at Hercules' feet all during the battle.

LADON, LADON2 (railgun)
There are two Ladons in mythology. One was the river on whose banks Hercules, after a year's pursuit, captured the Ceynean Stag. The other was a dragon, the son of Phorcys and Ceto, that guarded the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. Hera was very fond of her dragon and she wept bitterly when Herc killed. Hera then set him in the sky as the constellation known as the Serpent.

LAMIA, LAMIA2, LAMIA3 (Pulse cannon)
An evil spirit that steals and kills children. Originally, Lamia was a queen in Libya. She was loved by Zeus, and Hera, jealous, killed all of Lamia's children by Zeus. Lamia (helpless against Hera herself) avenges herself by destoring other people's children. She was thought to have the form of a serpent and in time, came to be used as a bogey with which to frighten children. Keat's peom Lamia tells the story of an old man who, unwittingly, married a Lamia.

NIX (Machine gun)
Misspeling of Nyx, the personification in Greek mythology of night, not merely the daily interval of darkness but of the great darkness that preceded all of creation. She was immensely powerful and greatly feared. Zeus himself greatly reveres her and often consults her and she speaks from her own oracles in stygian caves.

NYMPHE, NYMPHE2 (Small missile launcher)
A class of lesser deities in Greek and Roman mythology. They were concieved of as spirits in the form of young maidens, who inhabited woods, trees and mountains. They often served as attendants of the major goddesses.

OGRE, OGRE2 (Plasma rifle)

ORC (Plasma rifle)
In Beowulf, ll: 112,the zombie-like Grendel’s race is described as Orc-néas, which seems to mean "corpses of Orcus." Orcus, in Roman mythology, was an alternative name for Pluto, Hades, or Dis Pater, god of the land of the dead. The name "Orcus" seems to have been given to his evil and punishing side, as the god who tormented evildoers in the afterlife. Like the name Hades (or the Northern Hel, for that matter), "Orcus" could also mean the land of the dead. Tolkien derived his 'Orcs' from this passage in Beowulf. However, the word "orc" had long existed in English as the name of a type of sea monster. This derives ultimately from Pliny the Elder's description of the orca, modulated through the long tradition of Medieval Bestiaries. According to one medieval source, Charlemagne encountered and destroyed an orc that attacked his ship in the Mediterranean. In Orlando Furioso, an epic by Ludovico Ariosto, the name of "orc" was given to a sea monster that captured the damsel Angelica, and was fought by the hero Rogero riding a hippogriff. This orc was huge, scaly, tusked, pig-nosed, and bristled. From this usage, the word "orc" made it into English by being used by Michael Drayton in his Polyolbion, an epic poem about Brutus the Trojan and the mythical founders of Britain, and also appears in the epic poem Paradise Lost, by John Milton.

ORTHOS (Rocket launcher)
Misspeling of Orthros, the two-headed dog that guarded the cattle of the monster Geryon. The carrying off of Geryon's cattle was Hercules' tenth task and thus demanded the deaths of both Geryon and Orthros.

PERYTON (Pulse rifle)

PIXIE, PIXIE2, PIXIE3 (Machine gun)

PHANTOM (Burst rifle)

PYTHON (Hand railgun)
A female dragon born from the mud of Deucalion's flood. The oracle at Delphi was at first her oracle and it was only by slaying her that Apollo made the shrine - the most sacred in all of Greece - his. The actual seat of the inspired priestess at Delphi was called the Pythia.

ROC, ROC2, ROC3, ROC4 (Pulse rifle)

SATYROS (Missile launcher)
Misspeling of Satyr. They were forest gods, usually attendant upon Dionysius. Like the fauna and Pan (Faunus), they had the head, arms and torso of a man but had a goat's ears, small horns and the hindquarters of a goat. They are usually represented as dancing, playing musical instruments and, above all, chasing nymphs, for they were also perverts.

SIREN, SIREN2, SIREN3, SIREN4 (Back radar unit)

SKULL, SKULL2 (Laser rifle)

SKYLLA, SKYLLA2 (Plasma cannon)
Misspeling of Scylla, the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto (in some accounts, Hecate). She was a six-headed sea monster, and each of her six heads had three rows of teeth. Her lower limbs were snakes and barking dogs. She was immortal and invincible and lived in a cave opposite Charybdi. A nice illustration of Greek imagination is given in the fact that Circe warned Oddyseus that, of the two, he must take his chances with Scylla. As he did, thereby, to his grief, losing six men. Some legends say that she was once human and had only been changed into her monstrius state by either Circe or Amphitrite.

TAROS (Laser blade)
Misspeling of Talus, a bronze or iron mechanical man made by Hephaestus. He was the defender of Crete and kept enemies at bay by hurling gigantic rocks at them or turning himself red hot and embracing enemies if they came too close. His vital fluids were vulnerable only in one foot and Medea killed him by cutting the membranes or pulling the brass nails of this foot.

WRAITH (Handgun)
A wraith is an apparition of a person who is still alive, seen as an omen that the person is about to die. It is a Scottish word, first attested in English in 1513. One form of a wraith is a ghost of someone’s emotion. It is said when a person dies with anger a wraith will be formed from the anger. One example of a wraith is a poltergeist.

These are most likely more correct because the Machine guns in LR have a trend of being named after fairies.

A Wyvern is a kind of dragon with a pair of legs, barbed wings and a barbed tail...
It has no arms...

Nix's are water spirits...
They teach people the art of music for a small fee like food, etc...
But in some stories they drown people when they lean too close to the water...

Reading this thread made me want to try my hand at explaining the names of the Mirage cores myself.

Hope I don't make anyone angry by doing this, so here goes nothing...

SELENA- misinterpretation of Selene, goddess of the moon in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, and the sister of Helios, god of the sun. She fell in love with a handsome shepherd named Endymion, and lulled him to eternal slumber so he could never leave her.

URANUS- the god of the heavens and husband of Gaea, who personified the earth. He was the father of the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the 100-handed giants. The Titans, led by Cronus, then dethroned and castrated him. His dripping blood turned into the Erinyes, of Furies, who avenged crimes of patricide and perjury, while his severed genitals fell into the ocean and from them came AAphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.

I'll do the rest another time. It's hard to stay awake at 2 a.m.
