imo, people are people regardless of the way we meet or communicate with them. while the internet gives us the freedom to connect with people all across the globe, it does not free us from the responsibility of behaving properly when dealing with them. nor does it make such connections less real or important. as such, courtesy and respect needs to be maintained. hence my vote for mandatory intros. the latter need not be long or wordy, or strive to impress the other members (although the newcomer has the right to do so if he/she wishes.) the main purpose of the intro is to be courteous to the other people behind their usernames and avatars.
