You'll need to get back to a town. Exp stacks beyond 100%, it just doesn't show. So if you die when with a level 10+ character, you would only get 50% of the exp you farmed at the inner city.
In short, if you had like, 24000/24000 or 30000/24000 exp points and died, you'll only get 12000/24000 or 15000/24000 once you've been revived. Hence, you will not level up just yet.
