Philippine news related: What do you guys think about the ongoing story regarding Ex-President GMA being allowed to leave or not?
My two cents:
My two cents:
Quote:Personally, I think it's unjustified since the Supreme Court already allowed her to leave. See, in democratic countries we have to hold the rule of law above all else. If and only if the SC continues to make constitutionally invalid decisions, then the people will have no recourse but to file for their impeachment. My line of thinking is that politicians come and go all the time, but the law is the only institution in government that has a sense of permanence so it should be followed as much as possible, and adjusted accordingly if abused but under due process (as in through legislation). This issue really shows why the Philippines isn't a mature democracy yet.
About wanting to escape the country, we have to put things into perspective. GMA could have escaped the country at any time in the first few months of the new President. There are some people saying that she's feeling the heat and wants to move her bank accounts elsewhere, but there's electronic banking these days. The only reason I can think of is that there's an agenda at work by the current government to continuously run after the previous gov't to distract the populace from their failings.
The headlines before the GMA fiasco concentrated on the newbie Marines who were ambushed because their commanding officer essentially sent them to die. There are also a lot of other problems plaguing the government that they don't want to see on the headlines.
