The short explanation: Birds get spooked by fireworks, fly lower than usual at night , collide with tress and other obstacles due to poor light conditions and lack of stars for navigation, and die. Also, bird population in affected areas is over a million typically, so a couple of thousand deaths is not going to impact them.
