Very grimdark but also very memorable, since even though the premise that the characters are destined to die is pretty evident from the beginning, there is still an underlying positive message in there. It is quite different from most mecha series but i can still draw some parallels to Evangelion and Rahxephon since some of the themes are similar enough.
Never really got around to finishing this one though. Started it last year but stopped around a quarter of the way in since it got a bit depressing for me. Maybe i'll get around to it one of these days.
