The general consensus now is that people are still getting used to the point of Google Wave, much like Twitter a few months back. It's really quite a mystery at first, especially since the interface is quite muddled and unclear. It'll take a bit of a creative push on the part of the end-users for the usage of the protocol to really blow up, since people are very much ingrained into the world of email/IM/Twitter/Facebook.
