Gov’t to spend P90M on initial flu countermeasuresThe government will spend as much as P90 million initially to prepare the country against the spreading Influenza A/H1N1 virus, the Health secretary said on Friday. Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III said more than half of the amount will go to stockpiling one million capsules of the anti-flu drug oseltamivir (marketed by Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. under the trade name Tamiflu), as ordered by President Gloria M. Arroyo. "Our stockpiling is part of the P90-million [spending] recommended by the Health department’s technical working group to ensure that the initial phases of our preparedness are put in place," Mr. Duque said. The World Health Organization raised its alert level for the Influenza A/H1N1 virus spread last Wednesday to phase 5, or the stage before the phase 6 pandemic level, meaning a pandemic is just a matter of time.
