Anyway, item lag is because the game is played out in real time. If there was no item lag, players would be able to spam potions and its variants while holding say, a hammer. Hammers make monsters dizzy after a certain number of hits, usually opening them up to two triple pounds.
Some monsters in the game can't take a lot of hits, but hit very hard and fast. Potion spamming would allow the player to become invincible for a short period of time, probably enough to kill the monster.
