Haha! Yeah. I kinda noticed that in a lot of old-school games, running like hell works the most in getting through the stages. A guy who did a speed run of Castlevania (the first one) was running (/walking) constantly, and made use of the occasional glitches or shortcuts (like intentionally getting hit by an enemy to help your character get up the next platform) to finish the stage faster.
