Alright, I was lurking through the web as always and I came across this (arguably) little known program called M.U.G.E.N. It's a 2D fighting game engine, where you can create your own characters and stages and moves and stuff. But you can also import data from most of the fighting games that have been created in gaming's history. Awesome.
Read up on it <a href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N' target='_blank'>here</a> if you want, but the download link for Windows is <a href='http://unofficial-winmugen.jpn.org/' target='_blank'>here</a>.
I've looked at the YouTube vids for this game and they are looking fun. Imagine a Ken Masters doing a Guile Flash Kick, or an Akuma teleport. Or Pocket Fighter Ryu going toe to toe with a full-fledged Wolverine.
And yes, as with all cool things on the Net, there are already large communities for this type of stuff.

<a href='http://www.mugen-infantry.net/' target='_blank'>Mugen Infantry</a>

Many more out there, I'm sure. Hooray for the Christmas break. XD
