Here's a great start.
Having watched a majority of those films (Gladiator, Braveheart, The Patriot, Cold Mountain, 300, Apocalypto, Shakespeare in Love, and Crouching Tiger specifically), I actually agree with the funny rationale. I mean, it's Hollywood, and the main purpose of the majority of Hollywood films is to entertain.
Of course some will argue the need for intellectual stimulation, and of course Hollywood has those too. Just don't expect all your stimulation to come from action flicks and romantic comedies.
