To be exact, atheists have yet to be shown any conclusive data that can convince them there is a god. Extraordinary claims need to be backed up by equally extraordinary proof.

Then that would make them agnostics wouldn't it? If they consider that a higher being may exist.

Atheists would probably say that, "God does not exist because there's nothing to sufficiently prove that he does."

As I stated earlier, the atheist position seems to be illogical because of continuously and independently created perception.
The Catholic church I think points to the concept of ultimate good as another refutation of atheism, but one would need to be a theist to support it.

Edit: Definitions given are the most general socially accepted ones and not definitions I came up with on my own.

By the way, I read this morning that scientists discovered a compound or substance that could make people forget things by interrupting neural connections in the brain. It opened up a rather contentious argument (which I'm not willing to debate) on whether a man would technically be able to play god towards another human by accepted definitions.

The really scary part is they were able to narrow memories down to which part of the brain they're located at, so they can erase memories with some accuracy.

Chemically induced dementia? Quite a scary thought.

Not quite sure. You'd have to speak to an atheist to get a better understanding of their specific reasons for not believing. The only constant for defining an atheist is their lack of belief in a god - the details as to how they reasoned this is specific to each individual.

I consider myself a deist. I do think there is a higher power at work, but I don't think I'll find answers to its existence through organized religion.

Think of it as the Force Shades

*Update*
This just in:

California overturns Proposition 8

http://www.pamshouseblend.com/diary/169 ... overturned

The ruling from the presiding judge:

Quote: Plaintiffs have demonstrated by overwhelming evidence that Proposition 8 violates their due process and equal protection rights and that they will continue to suffer these constitutional violations until state officials cease enforcement of Proposition 8. California is able to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, as it has already issued 18,000 marriage licenses to same-sex couples and has not suffered any demonstrated harm as a result, see FF 64-66; moreover, California officials have chosen not to defend Proposition 8 in these proceedings.

Because Proposition 8 is unconstitutional under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses, the court orders entry of judgment permanently enjoining its enforcement; prohibiting the official defendants from applying or enforcing Proposition 8 and directing the official defendants that all persons under their control or supervision shall not apply or enforce Proposition 8. The clerk is DIRECTED to enter judgment without bond in favor of plaintiffs and plaintiff-intervenors and against defendants and defendant-intervenors pursuant to FRCP 58.

If the local bishops read this, their heads are gonna explode XD

I just wished I could be there to see that happen.

^

Seems to me that Bishop Cruz was never on the receiving end of a beating by a spouse who comes in home drunk. Not my problem if he doesn't like legalizing divorce - the fireworks begin when he thinks he can tell non-Catholics how they should handle their marriage.

"Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" artist forced to go into hiding, change identity amidst death threats.

Religion of peace my hairy ass - you as much as criticize Islam, there's always going to be some dumbfuck cleric who wants you dead, along with people stupid enough to actually follow their demands.

What the fuck? Wanting to kill somebody over a stick figure?

RE: Organized Religion Discussion Thread - Grim - 09-16-2010

Well it is against their beliefs, so why instigate trying to draw Mohammed in the first place? Everybody knows it's a douche move - disrespectful.

You reap what you sow.
