Will it sink if you manage to break the legs?
I doubt it. Break = severely damage, not destroy. Somehow the hover's primary functions are still operational even after it gets hit with a parry blade. Most of the time the hover's legs are shot from the side on the airfoils, armor, and additional boosters. It's my guess that the hover component is safeguarded in the center of that entire apparatus. Yet again, FROM probably didn't want to make the games too literal.
Back in AC3 my hover AC went down the bottom when I left it sitting on top of the water for far too long LOL. IIRC Hover legs will adopt a "rest position" when the AC is left unattended. I'm not sure if this can happen in LR.
Yeah, I think that still happens. The hover's sitting position is the same as how it is when parked in the garage.
but that begs the question why?
It's the equivalent of that side-to-side movement animation that bipeds do when idle.
no no that I get what Im asking is why would it go idle to plunge to its imminent death. game wise its probably not a big deal but story wise (what little is there) won't that be a design defect?
Blame Fromsoft for the programming.

Or maybe it's just like an aircraft pilot sinking to his death in the ocean, because he was busy either sleeping or watching porn with a portable device to eject.
Story wise, it would be a design flaw. From what was already determined, ACs will eventually go into rest if it is left idle for some time (I would guess about 5 minutes). If hovers sink because the player doesn't touch the controller for 5 minutes, that would mean that hovers lack a sensor that would distinguish land from water. Not the best corner to cut on a multi-million credit customizable killing machine.
That brings up the question, is "hover" is necessary function for hover legs? LOL
From what that is already discussed, I would guess that the "rest" mode shuts down all functions.
If you pilot a hover AC, your last words are probably going to be "WTF!!!???"LOL

The porn-watching is debatable. LOL
If so, enjoy your last moments. Clapping
Another take, story-wise, is that there'll most likely be an option to configure the OS of an AC. Or AC pilots could just hard-mod it with something else.

Now that I think of it, you have to wonder if the OS of ACs' malfunctioning hath claimed the lives of some. BSOD!
Suicide with fashion. Seems like a good death sinking into the depth and being crushed by the water pressure along with a multi-million credit war machine. To be frank, that wouldn't be that bad, only problem is that the machine is yours. I'll just set my hovers to malfunction every time I decide to rest a bit and enjoy the blue open ocean. LOL
inside the AC garage.... me striking an epic pose wearing a core pilot suit holding a badass helmet. and towering at my back is my Sandalphon Mk. V (white, green and violet). Ohmy i am awed by my epicness..

Ha! Nice.
Sitting next to my Blood Falcon's Hogire head (despite the fact that my AC is irradiated) and looking at the sun setting on a war torn desert
