Police said the pilot, contracted to take an actor dressed as Santa to the party in the Nova Mare slum, was flying over the neighboring Vila Joao shantytown when it was fired upon on Sunday.
Santa later returned to Nova Mare by car to distribute Christmas presents.
Most of Rio's 700-plus slums are controlled by drug traffickers and are not regularly patrolled by police, who instead go into the slums in military-style raids, often using helicopters and armored vehicles.

That was really stupid on the part of the policemen. They allowed poor old Santa to fly over Rio's slum areas knowing full well that the chopper could (and probably would) be fired upon. Rio has one of the worst police forces in the world. They ought to get (and made to wear) Hello Kitty briefs for Christmas, and lime green/yellow/pink stripped socks.

In 2001 the murder rate in Rio was 45 for every 100,000 people and between 1978 and 2000, 49,900 people were killed in Rio. The numbers are comparable with war conflict zones like Baghdad and Kabul. Only 3% of murder cases are solved, considering the police have killed around 3.7 people a day in 2007. Compare this to 347 for the whole year 2006 by the entire US police force.
