Google is developing an open-source linux-based smartphone platform that will compete with the likes of the Blackberry OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and the mini OS X used on the iPhone.

Currently, Google's main objective is to complete the platform. But maybe in the future, if the "Android" platform does succeed, Google just might make the jump into the hardware business.

Several phone manufacturers have signed in and are expected to use "Android" in future devices.

Here's LG's concept device using the Android OS.

LOL look I got a "MASSAGE" from my phone LOL

Great idea by Google. Creating an open-source competitor to the iPhone's and Blackberry's OSs should shake up the market a bit.

Of course being built on that type of platform an Android-equipped phone will launch cheaper. Maybe for about $250 or cheaper (which somehow will end up costing you P20,000-25,000 when it gets here LOL). I can just imagine a few years ahead, people having their own, homebrew versions of the OS. Perfect!

That is a rocking concept design by LG by the way.

Especially since it comes with a massage from the phone. Haha. That looks cool

In this guy's article, he says why he thinks the Gphone is doomed to fail.

Why the likes of Nokia, and some others have not yet joined the Open Handset Alliance.

Aside from developing the Gphone platform, Google actually wants in on the whole mobile phone industry not just as a software developer but maybe even as a provider. Wow.

Haha one day Google's going to be in control of oil. And food supplies. And water.

I'm seriously thinking of getting one of these phones when they come out.

Well only time will tell. By the time this comes out, Nokia will definitely have something to match it, and the next-gen iPhone will probably be out too.

As a side-note: if you read this article, you'll remember how the author said that google simply doesn't have the charisma of, let's say, Apple. After watching that vid, I wholeheartedly have to agree. LOL

Haha generic looking coder junkies. Tongue

On a sidenote, Google's been integrated into a Linux distribution.

Interview with the distro's founder is here.

I saw this on Attack of the Show the other day. The T-Mobile G1 (previously known as the HTC Dream) is Android's launch phone.

There's a white version too. Specs are here.

I heard it went for around $200 at launch, which is very very good indeed, since

Now we only need people to hack into the T-Mobile grasp on the thing.

Very nice phone running on Android. It's meant for developers only though... and the price is just ridiculous. >_<
