Windows 7 - Grim - 10-31-2008

Gizmodo goes through a walkthrough of a beta build of the next Windows OS, Windows 7.

http://gizmodo.com/5069661/windows-7-walkthrough-boot-video-and-impressions

Basically, performance and usability are the things they concentrated on. There are pictures and videos of the improved UI, as well as comparisons of the boot-up and shutdown times of Windows 7 and Vista.

I'm happy that there are improvements and all, but I was a bit disappointed that it doesn't look different at all from Vista (I was expecting something like when we jumped from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95). I don't think that was entirely wise. MS is trying to move on from the bad taste Vista left in a lot of people's mouths, and marketing a new product which essentially looks the same might get confusing. I guess they poured too much money into the Aero look to flush it down the toilet.

But as always, time will tell. I plan to upgrade to 7 and just skip Vista entirely. Hopefully, this iteration of Windows will be better-supported and better-liked. Microsoft still has time to either screw this up or make it better.

I've been interested in Windows 7 for a while now, because like you I plan on skipping Vista altogether. Aside from hardware compatibility and UI, I wonder if it's time that the standard windows start menu is changed for the better. I also hope that there will be lower hardware requirement version that support legacy computers.

More screenshots.

As an (unfortunate) user of Vista - work laptop, planning to request a downgrade to XP - I appreciate the small changes in the UI, especially in the File Explorer. Mukha talagang mas malinis.

I'm also mightily tempted to try the beta build out on the desktop, but other people need to use the machine. :/

Engadget has an article out about their in-depth impressions of Windows 7, so you guys would know what to expect from it I suppose.

RE: Windows 7 - NiX - 01-29-2009

I'm actually really looking forward to Windows 7. It's very promising right now. I just hope they don't release to many strange versions like they did with Vista. -_-

RE: Windows 7 - NiX - 02-04-2009

Yuck. Windows 7 will still be coming out in LOTSA versions.

RE: Windows 7 - Grim - 02-05-2009

They had to end the good run. Sad

I'll probably get the Ultimate version, because anything less might feel like a handicap. But then again that's because I'm a power user.

Given that Windows 7 is faster than XP daw, and that computer hardware gets cheaper and cheaper really fast, yes, it is. Big grin
