Mirage has a certain way of naming their parts. Heads are named after insects, legs are named after predatory animals and arms are named after primates. Ever wondered what the names behind the weapons are. They're from mythical monsters and creatures taken from Greek, Roman, Norse and other legends and mythologies. Here's some info i gathered from some of my books.
ARGOS, ARGOS2 (Pulse rifle)
The kingdom of Agamemnon. Also, the name of the man who built the Argo, the ship in which the Argonauts sailed in search for the Golden Fleece.
CACUS (Rocket Launcher)
A giant son of Vulcan who appears in Roman mythology. He stole some of the cattle of Geryon from Hercules and by dragging them backwards into his cave hoped to elude discovery, since he thought their hoofprints wouls suggest that they were going int the opposite direction. Unfortunately for him, Herc heard the cattle mooing and killed Cacus.
CERBERUS (Double barreled laser cannon)
The three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the lower world. The creature was concieved of as having a serpent's tail and a mane of serpents. One of Hercules' labors was to drag the formidable monster up into the upper world and after showing it to Eurystheus (who had set the Twelve Labors) and then take it back.
CENTAUR (dual vertical missile launcher)
Beastmen who roamed the wilds of the Roman and Greek mythic worlds. They were mentioned as having the lower bodies of either horses or deer and the upper bodies of men. Highly intelligent yet warlike, they were often branded as "Guardians of the wild."
CHIMERA (Quartet laser cannon)
A fire-breathing monster whose body consisted of a lion in front, a goat in the middle anda serpent behind. It was killed by Bellerophon.
ECHIDNA (Pursuit missile launcher)
A monster and a prolific breeder of monsters. Half-woman and half-serpent, her parentage is variously given as Tartarus and Gaea
EMPUSA, EMPUSA2 (Missile launcher)
Monsters in various frightful forms, sent by Hecate to frighten travelers. They were amorous and generally finished their acts by eating their lovers. Among the Empusae were the Lamia.
FENRIR (Energy sniper rifle)
The wolf-monster in Norse mythology. It was concieved by Loki and is stronger than all of the Aesir. At Ragnarok, it is fated to swallow the sun and kill Odin. After killing Odin, it is destined to be torn in two by Vidar, strongest and largest of Odin's many sons.
GARUM (Sniper rifle)
A misspeling of Garm. Garm was the Norse equivalent of Cerberus. He is the snarling hound that guards the gates of Hel. At Ragnarok, he will be released and will kill and be killed by the god Tyr.
GERYON, GERYON2, GERYON3 (laser cannon)
A winged, three-headed, three-bodied monster who lived on the island of Erytheia and had a herd of man-eating cattle, which was guarded by a two-headed dog, Orthros, and a fierce shepherd. The bringing back of these cattle was one of Hercules's labors, a labor that he succesfully accomplished even though he had to kill Geryon, Orthros and the shepherd.
GOLEM (Sniper rifle)
Golems have appeared in many stories and video games - including Tolkien
